The Origin of the Windshield Wipers

Do you want to know a little fun fact about Liquid Glass Guard? Well, even if you said no, too bad, I'm going to tell you anyway. We are proud to be owned and led by a Woman. Not a big deal these days, but I wanted to let you all know before I passed along another little fun fact.

Do you know who invented the windshield wiper? You guessed it, A WOMAN. Not only was the windshield wiper invented by a woman, but get this, its inventor didn't even drive. Meet American inventor and entrepreneur Mary Anderson.

Mary Anderson is credited with inventing the first operational windscreen wiper way back in 1903. Mary's patent, which is today known by most as the windshield wiper, was called a "window cleaning device" and used for electric cars and other vehicles. A lever inside the car operated Mary's window cleaning device. Mary's story is that she was riding in the Big Apple in a streetcar in the middle of a sleet storm. She noticed the driver could not see out of the window and began sketching her idea right on the spot.

Her prototype developed consisted of a set of wiper arms made of wood and rubber and attached to a level by the steering wheel. Sounds safe, right? Unfortunately for Mary, her patent expired, and she never made any money from the invention. OUCH!

Years later, in 1917, another female named Charlotte Bridgwood invented the first automatic windshield wiper. She called her design the "Storm Windshield Cleaner," but her product never made it and was unsuccessful.

I wonder where we would be today in the windshield wiper world without the ingenuity of both Mary Anderson and Charlotte Bridgwood? Now that I think about it, I wonder what Mary and Charlotte would think of Liquid Glass Guard? Would they be mad that we have a product that limits the use of windshield wipers? I won't tell if you don't!
